The Importance of NR-12 Standard and Its Compliance Stages

Regulatory Standard NR12 establishes minimum requirements to ensure the safety of machinery and equipment, preventing workplace accidents and protecting workers’ integrity. Its correct application is essential for legal compliance and the reduction of industrial risks.

Compliance with NR12 is a structured process that follows fundamental steps to ensure safety and operational efficiency. Check out the main phases:

STEP 1 – Risk Assessment

This initial phase consists of identifying and assessing the hazards associated with machinery, following the guidelines of ISO 12100 and 13849-1. The objective is to determine the risks and establish appropriate control measures.

STEP 2 – Conceptual Safety Design for Compliance

Based on the risk assessment, conceptual solutions are developed to eliminate or mitigate the identified hazards. This design defines the safety principles to be implemented, considering the safe interaction between operators and machines.

STEP 3 – Executive Projects

This phase details the safety solutions, including the selection of devices, electrical diagrams, and protection mechanisms. The executive projects ensure that all planned measures are implementable and meet regulatory requirements.

STAGE 4 – Implementation of Safety Systems

Based on the executive project, the implementation of safety systems begins, which may include physical barriers, sensors, emergency buttons, enclosures, among other devices. Correct installation is essential for effective compliance.

STEP 5 – Safety Validation

After implementation, it is necessary to validate and test the safety systems in accordance with ISO 13849-2. This step verifies that the implemented solutions are operating correctly and ensuring worker safety.

STEP 6 – Training

To ensure the correct use of safety systems, it is essential to train operators, technicians, and others involved. Training should cover the operation of protective devices, safe procedures, and preventive measures.

STEP 7 – Continuous Improvement

Machine safety must be constantly monitored and improved. Continuous improvement involves periodically reviewing safety systems, assessing new risks, and implementing updates as necessary.

Compliance with NR-12 is not just about following standards — it is about investing in the integrity of your employees and your company. Each step completed is a step towards a more efficient and safer work environment.
